Determined to change, Penelope follows Ally, now Mrs. She’s only disappointed in herself, feeling that she was more of a burden than a help to her sister when they were in danger. Pen is ecstatic that her sister has found love and that Ally and Queen Victoria are safe. Her twin sister, who also happened to be engaged to the love of her life by the end of the Season. Except, really, it was mostly her twin sister Persephone who did all the finding and saving. She also managed to find her kidnapped governess, Melusine Allardyce, and simultaneously destroy a plot to subsume the will of the future queen with magic. She made it out alive, in any case, which was an unfortunately questionable point. It makes sense as well since this book did focus on the magic a lot more than the first one, and the setting really made the magic seem real.Penelope Leland had a successful first Season. I also thought that the setting for this book really added to everything, having it take place in Ireland really added to the magic element of the book. Him and Pen worked really well together and I liked how the story went for them. I mean, he was a bit of an idiot but overall he was a pretty great love interest. And last we have Niall, I really did love him as well. I liked that she was part of the story because she was so unpredictable and it really kept you guessing. Dorieann was an interesting character, I’m not sure how I feel about her but I think that might be the point. Lady Keating was a well done villian, the fact that she was such a mother figure made her that much scarier. I also liked the Keating’s for different reasons. The only thing I will say is that I miss reading about Ally, I’d love to read a book about her, but that’s fairly minor. I also liked the Carrighar were an important part of the story but they didn’t have more page time than was needed. Watching her get excited about her magical education and her progress as a witch was really nice. Pen was lovely to read, after watching her help Persy in book one it was nice to see her story. I really enjoyed all the characters in here as well. Pen isn’t as big a fan as her sister but she still managed to hold her own in conversations about things she had read. But they also have some similarities that we got to see in this book, like the fact that they both enjoy literature. You can really tell that the twins are very different people, with their own thoughts and dreams and preferences. It had a similar feel to the first but was definitely different enough that I didn’t feel like it was the same book. I enjoyed this one just as much as the first book! Just as full of cliches but still so good.
